Lloyd J Austin III, in his farewell remarks as secretary of defense, reflected on a career spanning 45 years, including his leadership of the Pentagon since 2021. Addressing troops, Austin highlighted achievements such as recalibrating the military's focus on China, rallying support for Ukraine, preventing conflict in the Middle East, and strengthening NATO.

He credited a historic $100 billion defense budget increase since 2021 and emphasized personnel advancements, including significant pay raises and military justice reforms. “Our greatest strategic advantage will always be the talents of the American people,” he said, advocating for diversity and high standards in recruiting. Acknowledging the burdens of service, he honored those lost in combat and the families who bear their absence.

Austin emphasized the importance of principled leadership and teamwork in safeguarding democracy and advancing global freedom, and concluded with a call to action: “The United States military defends not just the American people but also the American idea.”
