Foreign paper investigates US security officials’ online data
Private contact details, including mobile numbers, email addresses, and even passwords of top US security officials are available online, as reported by Der Spiegel. These include Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
Reporters discovered the data using publicly accessible commercial people-search platforms and leaked databases available online. Many accounts remain active and are linked to sensitive communications platforms like Signal and WhatsApp.
Cybersecurity experts warn that such leaks enable sophisticated phishing attacks and spyware installations, facilitating political blackmail. Cybersecurity specialist Donald Ortmann emphasized the heightened risks, including possible deepfake attacks targeting virtual meetings and private communications.
The National Security Council and the Office of the National Intelligence Director have stated that affected officials have updated their passwords and discontinued use of compromised accounts. However, Der Spiegel confirmed recent activity on these accounts, underscoring ongoing vulnerabilities.
