OpenAI’s GPT-5 set to launch early August
OpenAI is expected to release GPT-5 in early August 2025, marking a high-stakes moment in the accelerating evolution of artificial intelligence. As reported by the Verge’s Tom Warren, the new model integrates o3 reasoning capabilities to unify previous GPT- and o-series models.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has described GPT-5 as “a system that integrates a lot of our technology,” with notable advances in reasoning and generalist utility. Alongside the main release, “mini” and “nano” variants will be made available through API endpoints, broadening usability for a broad array of applications. However, Altman also noted that GPT-5 “won’t have a ‘gold level of capability’ for many months” after its launch.
The launch comes as the longstanding partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft faces new uncertainties. Microsoft, which invested $13 billion in OpenAI, has been renegotiating its agreement as OpenAI seeks to restructure and compete more vigorously. Achievement of artificial general intelligence (AGI) by OpenAI could force Microsoft to relinquish rights to AI profits and future models under current contracts. For now, industry insiders suggest GPT-5 will not clear the AGI bar.
