WV Senator Jim Justice commutes to DCA by private jet
Sen. Jim Justice (R-WV) flies to DCA for work each day by private jet, reports View from the Wing, despite financial troubles that have left him with a reported negative net worth. Justice’s Cessna Citation V shuttles between Greenbrier Valley Airport and Washington National Airport (DCA), the latter with severely restricted private jet traffic because of post-9/11 restrictions. The senator, who owns the Greenbrier Resort near the airport, claims he has not yet found a place to live in Washington and is paying for the flights personally.
While Justice insists on covering the costs, his financial struggles have been well-documented. Forbes estimates he owes more than $1 billion in personally guaranteed loans, court judgments, and environmental liabilities. The Greenbrier nearly faced foreclosure in 2024, and his coal businesses have suffered setbacks, with lenders—including an Emirati sovereign wealth fund—seizing assets.
Justice’s financial entanglements raise concerns about his independence as a lawmaker. His debts involve foreign investors, including Russian interests that sued to seize his helicopter over unpaid obligations. Meanwhile, Carter Bank, his largest creditor, has taken steps to auction his properties.
