WorldPride DC 2025 may warn trans travelers amid federal policy concerns
As WorldPride DC 2025 prepares to welcome millions to the nation’s capital, organizers are weighing a stark warning: that transgender travelers may not be safe in the United States due to federal hostility, reports the Washington Business Journal.
Ryan Bos, executive director of the Capital Pride Alliance, told the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments Wednesday that planners are considering a formal advisory for trans people coming to the two-week international LGBTQ+ festival, citing concerns over Trump administration policies.
“It’s possible that we may actually issue a statement telling trans folks internationally not to come—or if they come, they come at their own risk,” Bos said. The warning would follow consultation with InterPride, the global nonprofit that licenses WorldPride.
The move would mark a grim first for an event built around inclusion. “It’s really shameful that you all are having to consider making statements like that,” said Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater.
The festival — which runs May 23 to June 8 — is expected to draw more than 3 million people and generate $680 million in economic impact. The lineup includes a human rights conference, a parade, a festival, and a headlining Welcome Concert by Shakira at Nationals Park.
Organizers expect international participation may be lower than usual. Capital Pride Alliance board president Ashley Smith cited visa challenges and fears among travelers that they may not be allowed to return home. “We will be discussing with the DC government and our partners to determine how best to communicate that,” he said.
Meanwhile, some corporate sponsors — including Booz Allen Hamilton — have withdrawn support, and others have requested anonymity. The Capital Pride Alliance has launched a $2 million crowdfunding campaign to support the event under the banner “Hate is No Joke.”
